When a couple is struggling with difficulties or distress in their relationship it might seem there is no way to resolve or “fix” things.
The role of the therapist is to help you both air your concerns and frustrations in a neutral and confidential environment. The therapist encourages you to talk openly together about your shared difficulties, with the aim of improving communication between you. This can help you both learn to negotiate better, understand each others position and move forward from old unhelpful patterns of relating to each other. The therapist may also encourage you to look at how you could develop your relationship so that it is more fulfilling and satisfying for both of you.
