Family, child and adolescent therapy

It is common for tensions to arise in family life, or for there to be concerns about your child’s feelings, behaviour and more rarely their mental health. At times, parents may be left feeling out of their depth with the challenges of parenting children and young people. Children and young people value having their feelings understood and they need support to manage the things that cause distress.

Issues may include emotional distress for example feelings of anger and anxiety or behavioural difficulties, to more serious needs and mental health difficulties such as, depression, self-harm, drug misuse and eating disorders.

Our family therapists combine an holistic perspective of Occupational Therapy with clinical, developmental and family centred approaches that address the emotional challenges that children, young people and their families face today.

What will happen?

The first meeting will explore the concerns you currently have and clarify the level of need. A key part of this process will be considering your unique needs as a family. Clinical and psychological approaches will then be used to help understand the child/young person’s, parent and family perspective on the issues of concern. Meeting to discuss these issues can be an important way to begin to understand current difficulties, think together and consider new ways forward. Discussion can open up the possibility for new solutions and improved emotional well-being.

Clinical sessions provide space to reflect on current difficulties and think together about exploring new options and solutions. This will include discussion regarding the number of sessions that maybe required.

Confidential practice focuses on looking after the privacy and safety of your child and family. This is always discussed during the first meeting.
